OUR INVITATION

SAVOUR THE PASSION OF ITALIAN CUISINE APPLIED TO THE FOODS AND WINES OF VANCOUVER ISLAND AND BC

Slow food. The experience of enjoying local foods, local wines with friends and family. We invite you to enjoy a particularly Italian dining experience at Toscano’s here in the Comox Valley.

What makes Italian cuisine special? Like so much about Italy, it is the emphasis on hyper local. One third the size of BC, Italy has 21 distinct wine regions and corresponding micro food cultures. Small wonder that this is the birthplace of the modern “slow food movement.”

Toscano’s was founded on a love affair with the wines and cuisine of Tuscany. We invite you to join us as we apply the Italian culinary approach to the terroir and food of Vancouver Island, deepening your love affair with the good food and wine of our locale.

FINEST INGREDIENTS

WE ARE A LOCALLY SOURCED RESTAURANT THAT MAKES EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH.

We follow the Italian tradition of sourcing locally for several reasons. One of these is environmental: research shows that as individuals we have the greatest positive environmental impact on our locale by choosing local food and transportation. At Toscano’s we choose local because it is healthier for our community and our planet.

Two, when we buy from producers in our community we become part of a more sustainable local food economy. Third, buying locally means we are playing a part in growing a responsive and responsible community as we develop relationships with farmers and producers.

Finally, we share the Italian passion for local primarily because of taste. Fresh local food simply tastes better. Research is also showing that free-range animals and organically grown vegetables are more nutritious. At Toscano’s we are happy to know that good taste follows good community, economic, and environmental practices.

PAIR YOUR MEAL WITH OUR SELECTION OF ITALIAN AND BRITISH COLUMBIAN WINES

We believe that the best meals use the freshest, most local foods. We take a similar approach to our wine list, making an effort to match local foods with wines from the corresponding terroir.

We also believe that organic and “beyond organic” approaches to wine are yielding a superior product. That means you’ll see a number of wines on our list that are using the latest methods. Ironically, these “latest methods” are often based on ancient methods.

Vancouver Island’s terroir is unique. We are a very cool, northerly wine producing region. A lot of our wines, especially in marginal years, have a high acidity. Fortunately, this pairs well with  seafood, which we produce in abundance.

In our cellar you’ll find a large selection of Vancouver Island wines. Currently we list Venturi Schultze, Alderlea, Averill Creek, Beaufort, Bluemoon, and Rocky Creek. Rounding out our list, we carry a growing list of Okanagan wines, including selections from Painted Rock, Blue Mountain, Lake Breeze, Hester Creek, Harper’s Trail, Thornhaven and Noble Ridge, among them.

With a nod to tradition and the founders of Toscano’s, who loved the food and wine of Tuscany, we also carry a selection of Tuscan wines. These have, for good reason, long been favourites at Toscano’s, and we are proud to stock them with our new, local favourites.
